A Message from
Ernest Thompson
President
Amityville P.B.A
On behalf of the
officers and retired members of the Amityville Police Benevolent
Association, I would like to thank all of the generous friends of the
Amityville P.B.A. who make everything we do during the year a huge
success. I'd like to thank each and every one of you for your continued
generosity and support of our association.
During the past year,
the Amityville P.B.A. has helped the community in many different ways.
We are very proud of how we offer assistance to those
less fortunate than us by providing turkey dinners and gift
baskets during the holiday season.
We have sponsored teams in the Amityville Little League and The
Amityville Soccer League, and have members who have served as coaches in
both of these leagues.
The Amityville P.B.A. also continues to support the Amityville School's
sports teams in any way we can. We also participate in "Career
Day" at Amityville High School. A Police Officer shares his /
her professional experiences with students offering the possibility of a
Police career as a future option for interested students. This is always
well received.
The Annual Thomas
Smith, Sr. Ragamuffin Parade is always a success. Scores of children in
costume parade down Broadway to the Park Avenue Elementary School. The
children each receive a "trick or treat" bag of goodies and "tips
on how to have a safe and fun filled Halloween". This parade
was the idea of Officer Smith in 1954 and, since his death, it has been carried on
in his memory. The tradition for the parade is carried on to this day by
Tom's son P.O. John Smith.
Our members participate
in the Annual Rotary Club Apple Festival, where we sponsor a "Kid's Pics"
booth where photos are taken of children and placed in a folder along with
descriptive information about the child, and given to the parents in the
event of a lost or missing child. We urge parents to participate in this
program.
The Amityville P.B.A.
sponsors the "Chief Bill Kay Scholarship" for deserving
students who wish to pursue studies in criminal justice. Not only are we
involved with Amityville's children, we also belong to The Amityville
Chamber of Commerce and interact with the business community on a daily
basis.
As we begin a new era
of community oriented policing in the Village of Amityville, we are
working in cooperation with community leaders to be a visible part of
the community and to find innovative solutions to problems that effect
the quality of life in Amityville.
